About Toto
The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begins an extensive tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is a rock group from America who achieved their greatest success in the 1980s. The band was founded by session musicians who had experience and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.
The first album of the totos was the self-titled Toto which was released in 1978. The album was a huge hit and helped propel the band to international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen albums that have all been huge hits.
Toto composed their first and only film score in 1984 for the film Dune. This was a huge project and the entire group had to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another hit album. After a world tour, drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen, who was a member of Le Roux. The band continued their journey with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album had a host of hits, including "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. This gave the individual members of the band a chance to pursue solo projects. In 1996, the band returned to tour and release an album. This was the first time that the original members took to the stage together for over 10 years.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. The group broke up following this. Toto returned for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all the original Toto members appeared performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

With a variety of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world beats to soul and jazz, the group continues to delight fans with their energetic arena rock.
The band suffered several setbacks during their later years, despite their popularity. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a string of albums that were disappointing led Toto to end their tour for a couple of years. Toto returned to touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to the band's top form, and the tour that went with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
